The Real Lord’s Prayer
Jesus Never Confessed
Everyone has heard of the Lord’s Prayer, but what we traditionally call the “Lord’s Prayer” found in the gospel is not His prayer because it deals partly with confession of sin which Jesus never prayed. There are several places in God’s Word where we do see Jesus praying. One of these is Mark 14:36.
His Example
He is praying during the last few hours of his physical life on earth and it is both insightful as to his heart relationship with His Father as well as instructive for us as we seek to develop our personal, and corporate, prayer experience.
In this verse and prayer we find four elements:
- Intimacy with the Lord
- Faith in the Lord
- Requests of the Lord
- Submission to the Lord
The Path to God-Honoring Prayer
I believe that each of these four builds on the previous one. It all starts with relationship / intimacy. Intimacy leads to a growing faith in the power and goodness of Jesus. Faith leads to asking. As we develop intimacy and grow in faith, we begin to believe great things and ask for great things that honor who He is.
His Will Be Done
In all of this there should be a humble submission to the sovereign Lord of the universe and of our lives. This is in accord with the phrase in the “Lord’s Prayer” where Jesus instructs us to pray “Thy will be done.” Cam and Ghost Ship often lead us in worship with the song “My God, My Father which is now my favorite song to worship with in my times with the Lord. In the song, the line “Thy will be done” is repeated over and over.
